My Journey towards cracking PMP® in 1st attempt

For any project manager, passing the Project Management Professional (PMP®) certification test on the first try is a wonderful accomplishment. To ace the test on the first try, a lot of commitment, effort, and preparation are needed. I'll describe my road to passing the PMI PMP test on my first try in this blog.

Step 1: Eligibility Criteria and Exam Preparation

The first step towards getting PMP certified is to meet the eligibility criteria set by the Project Management Institute (PMI). I had to ensure that I met the requirements of having a minimum of three years of experience in project management, a bachelor's degree, and completing 35 hours of project management education.

Then, I started preparing for the exam. I perused Rita Mulcahy's PMP Exam Prep book and studied the PMP Exam Content Outline. I also studied PMBOK, and Agile Practice Guide. Instead of enrolling in a commercial PMP Exam Prep course, I've started exploring the resources offered by LinkedIn Learning and simplilearn. Additionally, to familiarise myself with the exam style and hone my test-taking abilities, I watched several of Andrew Ramdayal's videos and took a number of the free practice exams offered by Tia Simulator.

Step 2: Developing a Study Plan

I developed a study plan to manage my time effectively and ensure that I covered all the material before the exam. I allocated a specific time each day to study (best time to study is early morning), and I divided the material into manageable sections to ensure that I covered everything. I also created flashcards and quizzes to help me retain the information better.

Step 3: Practice, Practice, Practice

The PMP exam is a 200-question multiple-choice test that covers five domains of project management. To prepare for the exam, I took several practice exams and analyzed my results to identify my strengths and weaknesses. This helped me to focus my study efforts on the areas where I needed improvement. Also, I have taken few full length simulator exam to prepare myself for approximately 4 hours of continuous sitting for  the real exam.

Step 4: Staying Focused and Motivated

Studying for the PMP exam can be a long and challenging process, and it's easy to lose motivation. To stay motivated, I reminded myself of my goal and the benefits of becoming PMP certified. I also joined study groups and attended PMP exam preparation webinars to stay connected with other exam takers and learn from their experiences.

Step 5: Taking the Exam

When it was time to take the exam, I prepared my testing room according to the PMP test guidelines, noise and distraction free, well lit, having comfortable sitting, superb broadband having no downtime. I kept only my government ID card and water bottle on my table. My cellphone was kept on complete mute and kept away from me by 1-2 arms distance.

Conclusion

Cracking the PMP certification exam in the first attempt requires dedication, hard work, and strategic planning. By meeting the eligibility criteria, developing a study plan, practicing consistently, staying motivated, and taking the exam with confidence, I was able to pass the PMP exam on my first try. It was a challenging journey, but it was worth it, as it has provided me with a valuable certification and opened doors to new career opportunities.
